Because breast cancer has reached near epidemic proportions I feel it is very important to write this column every year because every year more women are diagnosed with breast cancer and it is probably an article you will only read if you have breast cancer or know someone who has the disease.
You always see male professional athletes wearing pink wristbands, armbands, and cleats on television to support breast cancer awareness.
Why don't you see women wearing testicular or prostate cancer ribbons?
Is it because modern women feel their problems are more important than men's? Why does contemporary society devalue men?
Ellen: Men make up less than 1% of all breast cancer patients - these are usually men who are overweight and/or have higher than normal levels of estrogen.

Is anyone out there already in the business. What suggestions if any could you give. For e.g: horror stories, success stories, good starting point, when to fold, basics of starting up such a business or design 101. This clothing line is a dream my mom who died of breast cancer had for me and my surviving children and now today I am also a survivor 3 years last month. I received the vision from an idea my son showed me and I know that the Lord will help us to make this a reality. We are just about done with the business plan just need really good business strategy/advice as far as the next step in promoting this line. Thank you all for any suggestions. Keep us in prayer. God bless. Some of the money we make will go to Hospice who without their help I would never had been able to care for five terminally ill family members in the past six years. I know what it is like to not have enough money to purchase medicine. May god bless you all for your suggestions and prayers for this endeavor.

Resolved Question: Totally awkward situation...?
I work on an administrative team of about 15 people. There's a girl on the team I'll call B. She is very pretty and we were all especially shocked when she revealed to us that she was 40! (not that you can't be pretty at 40, but she looks very youthful) So over the months she's shared many things with us and we've realized she can be quite the "one upper!"--but then we noticed that her general stories started getting stranger and stranger. For example, she is a two time breast cancer survivor...her mother is a top plastic surgeon who gives her free surgery (and that's why she looks as great as she does), she has a prosthetic boob, She's had 5 miscarriages and a stillborn baby, but started envitro treatments in February. She toured the world working for corporate Home Depot for 11 years, she teaches dance in the mornings as part of a physical therapy program, her sister died in a car accident and because of this her brother in law went balistic so she had to adopt her two children (who are 11 and 15)...to name a few things
For awhile I was in denial about the fact that these things could be lies. I mean, who would lie about those things anyway, but my coworkers started becoming very weary.
Completely coincidentally I was looking through an old yearbook with my friend...and there she was! Graduated in 2003...which would, giving her the benefit of the doubt of failing some grades...make her 26!? Which completely invalidates half of the things she says, and to make matters worse, my friend knew who she was! and said she never had a sister, and that her mother IS NOT a plastic surgeon!
Today she was telling a story about how Mandy Moore WENT TO HER HIGH SCHOOL and they were chummy. Mandy Moore didn't go to my high school. It took everything in me to say "Well, if you're in your 40s, why were you hanging out with Mandy Moore?"
I know it seems completely trivial and just plain stupid to even care about in the first place, but it's very frusterating being in an office with someone who I KNOW is this crazy liar...and to top it off, she has this cold, somewhat rude personality to go with it. Of course, how is anyone ever supposed to call her out on it? Are you just supposed to go along with it? Challenge the lies? or just ignore it? Very weird indeed.

hi. my great grandfather died of lung cancer in the 1990's. He and my great grandmother had 12 kids together and about 5 had cancer, but survived. But lately it's been too much. My grandmother died two years ago from stomach cancer. Now her sister is dying in the hospital at age 56 because the cancer is all over her body. Also, we found out recently that my grandma's other brother has cancer in his bone. But the doctors says his is treatable because it's in the beginning.
In my mother's generation one of her cousins had breast cancer because her mother (my grandma's sister is a breast cancer survivor). But she was the only case.
on my father's side, it's the same thing though. However my grandfather did not die from cancer, but a heart attack. His brothers however, i think about 2 out of 5 had cancer and died. And also only one case in my father's generation. This happens to be my aunt. She died fairly young before i was even born.
after this long story, my question is.... Can cancer be passed down from generation to generation? Especially in my case? :(

Ok I know this is dumb but I know nothing about it. My grandma who is like my other mom was just diagnosed with breast cancer. I have been taking care of her for the last month basically being her personal assistant. I took her to the doc several times and im so mad beyond belief I have never been so sad in my life she is in the hospital currently the cancer has went to her liver and her lung has blood clots in it and is collapsing. If you have any information on breast cancer or survivor stories please share .. cant stop crying
I might add that we talked to the doctor again to night they are doing surgery tommorrw. my mom said something about her being in stage 4 or level 4 something like that. We are having a family meeting with the doctor again tommorrw

Resolved Question: Is my mother verbally/emotionally abusing me?
My mother's mother (my grandmother) was not a good mom to her when she was my age (16) and during her adolescence, from what I know, she verbally abused and manipulated my mom. Now, it seems the cycle is continuing and my mother is treating me strangely similarly to how her mother treated her as a teenager (I know this not only from stories I've heard from relatives, but when relatives hear my complaints about her, they say that that is exactly what she used to complain about of her own mother).
More Background Info: my parents are divorced as of 2 years ago, and my mom is a breast cancer survivor. I have previously tried to move in with my dad, but she and my father's lawyers battled it out because she didn't want my brother and I to leave even though we want to go live with our dad. My mom and I fight and argue constantly. On almost a daily basis, she tells me things such as
"You'll never get anywhere in life. You are the meanest, cruelest, rudest person in the world, just as manipulative as your father."
She has even gone so far as to tell me I am partially to blame for her getting cancer, and if I dont stop causing so much stress in her life, it will return and it will be my fault.
She tells me I am to blame for her and my father's ongoing conflicts, and that our money problems are due to me not having a job and her having to hire lawyers when I was trying to move out.
She told me she will never forgive me for all the evil things I've done (when she was sick with cancer, she eavesdropped on a conversation I was having with my dad about being unhappy living with her, and then stuck a note under my door that said "you abandoned your own mother on her deathbed. I will carry that to my grave."
She tells me, sometimes threatens me, to move out of the house because she cannot stand to be around me, no one can, according to her. she constantly tells me to "quiet or shut my mouth" and sometimes when im talking to her she will ignore me, turn on the radio, or lock herself in a room.
obviously, she is very irrational and i believe she has some sort of clinical paranoia problem (she thinks everyone is out to get her and that while she had cancer people such as my aunt and myself were trying to kill her).
but does what she does to me count as verbal/emotional/mental abuse? please help. thanks.

Many experts said the surprising number of survivors is a wake-up call to all physicians in every specialty to not only understand their patients' cancer history but also the long-term effects of the disease and the treatment.
"The current thought is oncologists take care of cancer patients," said Dr. Lisa Diller, clinical director of pediatric oncology at Dana Farber Cancer Institute. "But cancer is not a lethal disease anymore, and now maybe the oncologist is no longer the center of a patient's health care."
The chances of cancer reoccurring depend on the form of cancer. Many cancer survivors endure long-term health effects, including infertility, osteoporosis and even post-traumatic stress disorder as a result of some cancer therapies. Some may also experience secondary cancers as a result of some types of treatments.
“These effects manifest themselves unrelated to their cancer," said Diller. "The people who provide primary care in this country will need to know more about how to care wholly for cancer survivors."
Many larger medical centers, especially specialized cancer centers, are doing just that. Messages poured in to ABC News' Medical Unit from more than 25 medical and cancer specialty centers across the nation, describing comprehensive survivorship programs. The programs work with health care providers from various subspecialties who help assess a survivor's medical and mental health needs after treatment.
"It's important to understand the cancer you had and the risk of recurrence or other health concerns," said Diller.
Unlike support groups, many of these programs offer individualized after-treatment plans for survivors. The University of Chicago Medical Center runs a sexual medicine clinic to help women who have survived breast or gynecological cancer regain their sexual independence.
Experts Say After-Cancer Care Crucial to Survival
Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles conducts a program that helps survivors overcome "chemobrain," a term used to describe adjustment disorders, and cognitive and learning disabilities, which can be side effects of extensive chemotherapy.
"I think there is hope for many. Despite diagnosis, people are surviving because of treatment options and supportive and follow-up care," said Jacobs.
Pardi said he was surprised to hear the number of survivors was so high -- especially since he recalled that his aunt, who had lung cancer, did not survive -- but was glad to hear there were more like him.
"Ever since I've been in remission, I haven't felt like cancer is a part of my life," said Pardi, who said he continues to receive routine screenings and annual follow-up care for his childhood leukemia.
Pardi said he'd kept his baseball cards and, with help from his oncologist, traded in the cancer.
"I really think the real definition of cancer survivor," said Pardi, "is someone who can almost 100 percent put the cancer behind them and move on to live just as full a life."
